About e-commerce

What are the different types of eCommerce providers?

There are three main choices of service for setting up your own online shop - eCommerce platforms, eCommerce plug-in software, and eCommerce marketplaces. We list recommended products from all three types.

eCommerce Platforms

Examples: Shopify, EKM.

eCommerce platforms are all-in-one services that provide you with an account within which you can create an online shop. Full shopping features are included, such as product listing details, shopping carts, search functionality, and customer accounts. The accounts are fully hosted so that you don’t have to create and host a website elsewhere.

eCommerce Plug-in Software

Examples: WooCommerce, X-Cart.

If you already have, or intend building, a website and want the shop to be an additional part of it, an eCommerce plug-in software package may be the answer. You will be responsible for getting the site hosted, but the software will have eCommerce features comparable to the all-in-one platforms and you’ll have complete flexibility in design. eCommerce software is often free or involves a single license payment, so can be a cost-effective option too.

eCommerce Marketplaces

Examples: eBay Shops, Sell on Amazon.

eCommerce Marketplaces provide a ready-made audience and all the tools to create an online storefront. It is the quickest and easiest way to get started with online retail, but you have to play by the marketplace’s rules and have the least flexibility. There are some well-known big players which shouldn’t be overlooked, but also some more specialist services covering niches. We currently list one of these - Etsy, for handmade and vintage items - but will be reviewing more in the coming months.

Our recommended products and services are listed below, and for a more detailed discussion check out our blog article “How to Create an Online Shopping Website”.
